About Me
Denisse Oller is not your typical chef. A dynamic, multidimensional communicator with many passions and interests, Denisse is a both a consummate journalist and a trained chef.
One of the most honored women in Spanish-language television, Denisse has a proven rapport with a wide audience. While she is highly adept at cooking up a lavish feast, she can also research, produce and host a sizzling exposè about that feast.
In a journalistic career spanning twenty years, Oller has been a national news anchor and correspondent, interviewing prominent figures in politics and culture ranging from Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Oscar Arias to Isabel Allende, Mario Vargas Llosa and Carlos Fuentes. Her familiar and reassuring voice has broadcast stories across the United States and Latin America, covering major news events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Oklahoma bombings, presidential elections and the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba, where she interviewed both dissidents and government officials.
Denisse Oller has received widespread recognition: five Emmys, nine Emmy nominations, five A.C.E. Awards, two Gracie Awards and the Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in investigative reporting. She was also named by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanic Personalities in the United States. After years in broadcast news, Oller yearned to pursue her love of food. In 2005 she enrolled in the Institute of Culinary Education (I.C.E.) in New York and upon graduation, created and hosted a weekly cooking segment on Univision 41’s morning show, “Al Despertar”, the Spanish-language equivalent of The Today Show.
Oller also created and hosted “A La Mesa con Denisse” on Telemundo/NY, a weekly cooking and lifestyle interview segment where she promoted healthy eating for Latinos, created exciting and affordable menus, and connected with her audience through her positive attitude and energizing message.
Currently, Denisse is the chef –in-charge of AARP’s on-line Spanish language food channel to launch July, 2010. She has also been designated celebrity chef for this year’s American Diabetes Association “Feria de Salud” to be held during the summer in NYC. In May, Denisse appeared on her native Puerto Rico as a guest chef in “Saborea”, the Caribbean’ s premier culinary and wine event .
Oller has also appeared on The Today Show and CNN en Español, and has been a featured chef at Macy’s and the Summit Wine and Food Festival, in Summit, New Jersey. She is currently working on her first cookbook, a memoir inspired by her travels, writes articles about food and teaches recreational classes at I.C.E. Oller’s work on behalf of Hispanic families has gained the recognition of distinguished organizations, and she sits on several boards including the Puerto Rican Family Institute.
