North Pole Snowballs



It seems every country lays claim to some form of this cookie. Russian tea cakes, Mexican wedding cookies, Italian wedding cakes, so for this time of year, let's call these North Pole Snowballs, made with peppermint candy instead of nuts.



1/2 cup finely crushed peppermint candies, divided

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 cup unsalted butter

1/3 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

2 1/4 cups a.p. flour

Historically, Latinas didn't give away their family recipes. Instead, they closely guarded them, especially if they were the best cooks in the village or town. I wanted to be one of those cooks, but for the same reason, cookbooks for Latin food were few and far between, and learning how to cook these dishes was going to be a challenge. Requests made by me to good cooks were met with ice cold stares, like I had just committed a huge sin.

So, undaunted, I searched out what I could find…
